Inter-House Debate Competition – A Battle of Ideas (28th September 2026)

The English Department of Convent of Jesus and Mary International School, Kharghar, organised an engaging Inter-House Debate Competition on 28 September 2026 in the School Hall. The event brought together students from Grades 8, 9 and 10, who witnessed an inspiring exchange of ideas, arguments and perspectives.

 

The topic for the debate was “In today’s world, fitting in matters more than thinking for oneself.” The competition witnessed a thought-provoking clash between Yellow House, speaking for the motion, and Blue House, speaking against the motion. The participants displayed confidence, clarity of thought and a commendable ability to present and defend their viewpoints.

 

The speakers were assessed on various parameters, including Content and Knowledge, Argumentation and Reasoning, Rebuttal and Counter, Evidence, Organisation and Coherence, Delivery and Communication, Engagement and Persuasiveness, and Time Management. The judges for the competition were Ms. Neha Chaurasia, Business Studies Faculty, and Ms. Susanna Rolston, English Faculty, whose observations and evaluation ensured a fair and meaningful competition.

 

The event was skilfully anchored by Vaidehi Agrawal of Grade 9B and Reeva Shinde of Grade 9A, who guided the audience through the proceedings with confidence and enthusiasm. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Arpita Sharma of Grade 9A, who expressed gratitude to the judges, teachers, participants and students for contributing to the success of the event.

 

The competition concluded with Blue House emerging as the winner. Gauravi Patil of Grade 9B was adjudged the Best Speaker from Blue House, while Larren Dsouza of Grade 9A was recognised as the Best Speaker from Yellow House.

 

The debate proved to be a valuable learning experience, encouraging students to think critically, articulate their ideas effectively, respect differing viewpoints and respond confidently under pressure. It was a vibrant celebration of the power of words and the importance of independent thought, logical reasoning and effective communication.
