Debate Competition – Grade 8, 9 and 10 – 2nd August, 2025

The English Department of Convent of Jesus and Mary International School organized a Debate Competition for senior students, which saw enthusiastic participation across all four houses. After several challenging preliminary rounds, the final round was held on 2nd August between the Red House and the Blue House. The debate revolved around the thought-provoking topic: “Should Shakespeare be replaced by Indian authors for Classes 8, 9, and 10?” The event aimed to foster critical thinking, confidence, and public speaking skills among the students.

The final debate was a lively and engaging session, with both teams presenting strong, well-researched arguments. The Red House spoke in favour of retaining Shakespeare, emphasizing his global literary influence, the richness of his language, and the timeless relevance of his themes. On the other hand, the Blue House argued for replacing Shakespeare with Indian authors, highlighting the importance of cultural context, relatability, and promoting native literature in the curriculum. Both sides impressed the audience and judges with their clarity, confidence, and persuasive reasoning.

After a closely contested round, the Blue House was declared the winner for their compelling points and effective delivery. The judges commended all participants for their preparation and articulate presentations. The debate proved to be an enriching experience, encouraging students to appreciate diverse literary voices while sharpening their analytical and oratory skills.
